Guest Speaker: David Canton

In 1939, Lawrence Dunbar Reddick received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Chicago. As a black public intellectual he taught at Historically Black College and Universities, published in black journals such as The Journal of Negro History, gave speeches at black high schools and churches. African Americans created their own institutions and this black public space allowed them to be engaged in their community.
