- So, what first got you interested in pursuing a career in political science?
I first became interested in pursuing a career in political science at Lafayette College. I initially thought about attending law school, but it seemed like the professors were getting to do so many more interesting things, by pursuing whatever research questions intrigued them. I started working on research with the outstanding mentorship available at Lafayette and found the process very rewarding and fun. Continuing into graduate school, I realized this was definitely the right field for my interests and talents.
- Can you tell me more about how you chose your area of focus?
Honestly, coming from a state (Nebraska) with its own unique political institutions made me really interested in how other institutions shaped other states’ politics. I was initially really interested in direct democracy, but have expanded into many different institutions based on what’s been done. There is so much variety in what states are doing and how they are trying to innovate. I am also very interested in how the parties that shape those institutions pick and choose the ones they implement.
- What made you want to become a professor?
I really like the process of working on research I am interested in. I also love working with students who are really passionate about what they are doing and conducting research. It’s an excellent opportunity to help them along their path in life.
- If you weren’t a professor, what would you be doing?
If I could pick what I was doing, I would be the GM of the Minnesota Vikings or run some type of data analytics for them. Realistically, I would be working in a research department for either a think tank or a non-profit I supported.
- What made you want to come to the University of Florida?
I really liked how so many professors have worked in state politics. Often times getting people to care about state politics is one of the biggest hurdles. In this department, that is not an issue; there is great expertise I can lean on when developing my own research in state politics.
- What’s a goal you have for this semester?
To not get attacked by an alligator.
- What’s one thing about UF that surprised you?
There are a lot fewer alligators than I anticipated. Coming from San Diego, I knew Gainesville would be hot, but wow, the humidity is a real thing.
- What’s one thing you like about UF?
I love the Spanish Moss; it is very beautiful. It really helps frame the campus and creates some picturesque scenes.
- What is one piece of advice (life, college, or otherwise) you would give to students?
Always think about your personal brand. Show up to things, make a good impression, go to office hours, and be around. Professors like people who make an impact, and being around is their best heuristic for if you are doing that before they get to know you.
- What are some things on your bucket list?
Watch the Minnesota Vikings finally win a Super Bowl.
- What’s a random fact about yourself most people don’t know?
I’ve broken my left wrist three times, making it very painful to do push-ups.
