The U.S. Elections: What can we Learn from Other Populist Governments?

November 2, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

What lessons can we learn from populist experiences around the world to make sense of Donald Trump’s Populism? If populism thrives on polarizing the population into two camps and building enemies, it is possible to reach reconciliation after populism. When and how populism disfigures democracy? Does populism lead to competitive authoritarianism, and how? How does populism mute into fascism or dictatorship? Could populists democratize unequal societies and polities ruled by technocrats? Is left populism the answer to stop rightwing variants? What went wrong with populists like Chávez that promised to improve the quality of democratic participation and representation?

Though it is not required, people can RSVP here to the event either through Facebook or through Eventbrite.

The event will go live on the Center’s YouTube channel at 12pm on November 2.
