Populism: Conceptual Strategies and Debates

November 20, 2020 @ 12:50 pm - 2:00 pm

Populism in no longer confined to unstable political systems in Latin America or Africa. Major democracies like Brazil, the United States, India, and the Philippines are ruled by populist leaders. At the same time Europe is going through a populist moment. From a marginal topic of historians and a few social scientists, populism nowadays is a hot topic and publications on this subject have grown exponentially. Yet despite the increasing number of articles and books, there is no agreement about what populism constitutes. The talk will critically review the epistemological assumption of different conceptual strategies and differentiate varieties of populism focusing on its relationship with democratization and authoritarianism.
